Darrell Landon Helm

Darrell Landon Helm, age 55 of Red Oak, Texas, passed away on June 23, 2023. He was born in Rotan, Texas to Virgil and Wanda (Payne) Helm before the family moved to Uvalde, Texas where he attended grade school, later they moved to DeSoto, Texas where he graduated high school in 1986. After high school he went on to obtain his BA in Soil Science from Tarleton State University. Darrell met the love of his life, Darla Kay Howle, in 2005 and married in 2009.  He loved NASCAR (#18 Fan) and loved visiting the Texas Motor Speedway, dirt tracks, essentially anything racing outdoors. His grandkids were his world and loved keeping them; they affectionetly called him Poppy. He rode bikes with a cycling group, but ultimately liked going at his own pace. He enjoyed working out at home in his spare time along with yard work and being outdoors. Darrell enjoyed deer hunting in Graham, Texas where he had a deer lease. He will be remembered for always being a happy-go-lucky, kindhearted person who could talk to anyone. Of all the things Darrell loved, his family was his life. They enjoyed traveling, Padre Island being a favorite destination. He would take the whole family and spend time touring the island. Darrell was a big kid at heart; once he purchased his nephew (age 5) a BB Gun and later had to pay for his neighbor’s broken window. Another time, while playing with his nephews he demonstrated a jump in the living room and ended up with a broken wrist. The kids enjoyed Darrell’s playful nature. Darrell had a magnetic personality, and it was not uncommon for strangers to share their life story with him. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Darrell is preceded in death by his father Virgil Helm.

He is survived by his loving wife Darla Helm of Red Oak, Texas; children: James Smith of Desoto, Texas, Christian and spouse Jon White of Red Oak, Texas; mother Wanda Helm of Desoto, Texas; grandchildren: Leiland Smith, Peightyn White, and Grayson White; brothers: Monte and Anna Helm of Belton, Texas, Greg and Amber Helm of Forney, Texas and his nieces Lauren Helm and Landry Helm as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Green Funeral Home Red Oak, Texas.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 30, 2023 at Green Funeral Home Red Oak, Texas. Bro Jeff Conrad officiating.
