The world lost a bright spark when Patsy Ruth “Nanny” Hamilton, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on October 7, 2025, at the age of 86. Known to her family simply as “Nanny,” Patsy lived life boldly, loved deeply, and had a personality that filled every room she entered.
She was born on June 1, 1939, in Birthright, Texas, to Johnny Milton Groves, Sr. and Nola Earline Ferguson. Her family later moved to Galveston and eventually settled in Grand Prairie, Texas, where Patsy graduated from Grand Prairie High School with the Class of 1957. Patsy came to know the Lord at the age of 15 where she was baptized at her home church in Grand Prairie.
Shortly after graduation, Patsy married the love of her life, Frank Andrew Hamilton. While Frank served in the U.S. Army in Germany, Patsy held down the fort as a devoted Army wife. When he returned, the two built a beautiful life together—one filled with love, laughter, and plenty of unforgettable memories.
Patsy dedicated her early years to raising her children and creating a warm, welcoming home. Later, she entered the banking industry in 1978, where she worked with dedication until retirement. Never one to sit still, she went on to work at WorldCom before officially retiring, ready to enjoy the adventures she loved most.
Those who knew Patsy will remember her vibrant spirit. She was feisty, brutally honest, quirky, and always the life of the party. She had a flair for the bold, gaudy, and glittery, never passing up a chance to wear her favorite bling. She loved a good margarita, a cigarette, and a day spent fishing on Sam Rayburn Lake. “She took her fishing very seriously.” She found joy in tending her flowerbeds when she was able, road trips to Branson, Missouri, and trying her luck at the casinos in Oklahoma. And if Elvis was playing, you could bet she was singing and dancing along.
Christmas was Patsy’s favorite time of year, when her home transformed into a sparkling wonderland filled with decorations, joy, and the laughter of family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her Nanny, and she wore that title with pride… that’s how most everyone knew her. They were her greatest joy, lighting up her later years with endless love and laughter.
Patsy was preceded in death by her loving husband Frank Hamilton, her mother Earline Shuffield, her father Johnny Groves, Sr., and her brothers Jack Groves and Johnny Groves, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter Teresa Johnson and husband Chris, her son Alan Hamilton and wife Kayla; her grandchildren Brandi Brown and husband Greg, Cody Garcia and wife Katelyn, Garrett Hamilton, and Courtney Hamilton; and her great-grandchildren Paisley and Parker Brown and her brother Billy Shuffield.
Nanny’s love, humor, and sparkle will be remembered and cherished by all who were lucky enough to know her. Her laughter lives on in the stories we share and the memories we hold close.
