Norman Michael Heckathorn, age 82, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026 surrounded by loved ones in his home in Scurry, Texas. Born on April 10, 1943 in Franklin, Pennsylvania, Mike lived a life rooted in faith, family, and purpose. He was a devoted husband, proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, teacher, coach, and mentor whose impact extended far beyond the football field and the classroom. Mike’s greatest joy was his family, closely followed by his unwavering love for his Lord. He dedicated much of his life to teaching and coaching football, shaping young lives with patience, discipline, and encouragement. He was a constant and enthusiastic presence at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, always their biggest fan. In his quieter moments, Coach Heck enjoyed reading Western novels, faithfully watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and The Price is Right, and trying his luck with lottery scratch-offs, hoping for a win, but mostly enjoying the fun of it. These simple pleasures, paired with his steady faith and deep love for those around him, defined a life well lived. Coach Heck will be remembered for his kind heart, strong values, quick smile, and the lasting legacy of love, faith, and guidance he leaves behind.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Norman and Dorothy Heckathorn; and his sister Cheryl Bryant.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Deborah Heckathorn; his children: Victoria Griffith and son-in-law Thomas Griffith, Amby Clinkscale and son-in-law Brad Clinkscale, Joseph Heckathorn and daughter-in-law Jenny Heckathorn and Remica Bigham and son-in-law Flint Bigham; his grandchildren: John-Thomas Griffith (wife Brenna), Tyler Griffith (wife Maggie), Kaytlin Staalsen (husband Gunnar), Gehrig Heckathorn, Sofia Heckathorn, Brayden Clinkscale, Berklie Bigham, and Lawson Bigham; eight great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy and pride; his faithful, furry companion who was always by his side, Lil’ Man (aka Red Dog); and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and others he called “family.”
