Michael "Mickey" Johnson Obituary

Michael Bryon “Mickey” Johnson, age 69, passed away on January 14, 2026. He was born on September 29, 1956 in Waxahachie, Texas to Harold Kenneth and Charlene Elizabeth (Smith) Johnson. Mickey grew up in Ferris, Texas and graduated from Lancaster High School. He was a proud father and grandfather, roles he cherished deeply and spoke about often and he took great joy in being present for the people he loved, especially later in life.

Known for his big personality and presence, Mickey was truly a people person. He never met a stranger, and everyone who knew him had a Mickey story. He was a walking core memory.  He was social, outgoing, and connected to his community, often enjoying good conversation and laughter with friends many times at places like One More, Texas Rose, church or Javier’s Café in Ferris, one of his favorite gathering spots. Mickey was an avid sports fan and a walking sports encyclopedia, especially when it came to high school basketball and football. He was a die hard SMU Ponies fan, Philadelphia Eagles, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks. He loved Desoto Eagles and Lancaster Tigers.  His passion for sports carried into his family life, as he loved attending his sons’ and granddaughter’s sporting events, cheering them on from the sidelines.

Music was another great love of Mickey’s life. He was a devoted rock ’n’ roll fan who loved attending concerts and sharing that experience with his boys when they were younger. He fondly remembered seeing iconic bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and KISS when they were brand new and just beginning to tour, Aerosmith was one of his favorites. Stories he loved to tell and retell, he knew the date of every show. He helped bring Metallica to Ferris in 1996, when they headlined Lollapalooza 1996. In his early years, he also had a passion for fast cars, embracing life with energy and excitement. Kenneth had him in the fastest sports cars in his younger years.

Mickey worked at Atco in his teens and 20's, he could work every machine and basically run the company for Harley and Kenneth. He also helped run Big D Ranch (Old Fort Dallas) often attended by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders calendar shoots, Cattle Barons ball with Willie Nelson and much more. Later became involved with the Teamsters Union out of Dallas.

Mickey will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his love of family, music, sports, and community, and for the countless memories he created with those around him. Mickey had been to over 300 concerts, he'd tell his son Derek, that he graduated from L.S.U, Lamar Street University. He walked to his own beat. He had the smarts to talk to you about any subject.

His presence will be deeply missed, but his stories, laughter, and spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. In his last days he just wanted to stay at home and watch games. As his health deteriorated he didn't want people to see him in a bad condition but his mind was sharp as a tack until the last day. Rock on dad. We love you.

He is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Charlene Johnson

He is survived by his two sons: Brian and wife Maranda Johnson of Bristol, Texas; and Derek and wife Sarah Johnson of Palmer, Texas; four grandchildren: Kennedy Johnson, Addison Johnson, Eva-Leigh Johnson and Lily-Mae Johnson; brother Gary Johnson of Brownwood, Texas, as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
