Mathias Castillo, Jr. Obituary

Mathias L. Castillo, Jr., lovingly known as Monty or by his family nickname "Crockett," passed away on September 1, 2024, at the age of 68. Born on April 22, 1956, in Greenville, Texas, to Mathias Lujan Castillo, Sr. and Tony Estrada. Monty was a man of strength, humor, and deep love for his family and friends. He attended school in Greenville, where he excelled in high school football; he graduated with the class of 1975. At the age of 18, the family moved to Dallas, where he later attended Eastfield College in his early 20s. His career as a concrete finisher was marked by his significant contributions to many of the large buildings that now define the Dallas skyline. In 1988, Monty met Christine Sanchez, the love of his life, they were married on Friday, October 13, 1989. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Candice and Catherine.

Monty cherished the time they spent together as a family grilling out and throwing large celebrations for the 4th of July. Known for his sense of humor, Monty could easily shift from light-hearted banter to serious conversation. He was an avid storyteller, especially about the old days in Dallas as an "OG", and was immensely proud of his East Side roots.

His love for his family was evident in everything he did—from tending to his yard to spending time with his grandsons. A die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, he could often be heard cheering, "Here we go!" during football season and teasing Raider fans. His passion for WWE and RAW was just as strong, and he loved drawing others into the excitement of the games and matches he watched. Monty’s love for movies and music was as varied as it was deep. From old Westerns featuring John Wayne to action and scary movies, Monty enjoyed them all. He had a particular fondness for "Bonanza," "The Walking Dead," and the Marvel movies and loved dancing to Tejano music on Saturday nights in the living room. He raised his daughters to be tough, independent women, teaching them everything from how to use tools to building furniture. Additionally, he was a father figure to many nieces and nephews, enriching their lives in many ways. His skills extended to working on cars and remodeling with friends. He always loved cruising to visit his friends on “Bad Street” in Ferris. Monty was also known for his hats, always matching his T-shirt, he was known as "Cat in the hat" at the center. He is remembered as a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a man who lived life fully and on his own terms. His legacy of love, laughter, name calling and teasing people will live on in all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Laura Castillo and grandbaby Emery Davila.

He survived by his loving wife Christine Castillo; daughters: Candice and husband Brian James,  and Catherine and husband Jon- Michael Davila; three grandchildren: Isaac James, Elijah Davila, and Theo Davila; sisters: Delores Gonzalez, Rebecca Zapata, and Teresa Rodriguez; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.
