Marilyn Matthews Obituary

Marilyn Y. (Warfield) Matthews, Age 66, of Ferris, Texas, passed away on January 1, 2022.  She was born May 9, 1955, in El Paso, Texas, to Larry and Ora Mae (Bates) Warfield.  Growing up in El Paso, she graduated from Bel Air High School.  Later she attended the University of Texas at El Paso, where she began her studies as a medical transcriptionist and music major specializing in classical music, piano and choir.  After careful consideration, Marilyn pursued and received her associate's degree in accounting.

She was heavily active in the church and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a member of Friendship Baptist Church in El Paso.  She met the love of her life, Larry D. Matthews, during a hospital stay in 1979, and they married later that year, on September 15, 1979.  Together, they moved to the Dallas area in 1980, settling in Ferris in 1993, where she was a loan manager for 30+ years, starting with Republic Bank, which is now Bank of America.

Marilyn Matthews was a quiet person who continued following God after she moved to Dallas through reading her Bible, attending Coming of Christ Full Gospel Church, and singing her favorite gospel songs.  Her other favorite pastimes included coloring, reading, playing with her cats, and going for early morning drives with her husband.  Marilyn’s love of classical and choir music was shared with their very talented daughter, Dr. Latoshia Leonard.  Even though she struggled with sickle cell anemia throughout her life, Marilyn never let it get her down and never had an excuse for not doing something.  She has inspired many and will be missed by all who knew her.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her father, Larry D. Warfield, Sr., and brother Jerry Warfield.

She is survived by her loving husband Larry D. Matthews of Amarillo, TX; daughter Dr. Latoshia M. and husband Lonnie Leonard; grandchildren: Quinlon (Danielle Leonard), Ernest Leonard, Helen Leonard and Kory Leonard; siblings: Michael (Arcie Warfield), Patricia White (Ray White), Sarah (Quint Everett), Bertha Wilson, Terry Warfield, Charles Warfield and Larry D. Warfield, Junior; as well as numerous nieces nephews another extended family members and dear friends.
