Larry Grant Ashbrook, Sr., age 81 of Ferris, Texas passed away on November 16, 2024. Born on August 17, 1943 in Sedalia, Missouri to Homer Grant Ashbrook (Dempsey) and Mary T. Ashbrook (Daffron), Larry lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep connection to the land and skies. A 1962 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School, Larry spent his childhood growing up in Sedalia, MO, becoming a lifeguard at the local community swimming pool. Larry enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after graduation, proudly serving two tours in Vietnam as a radarman aboard the USS Navarro. Following his honorable service, he pursued his education at Findlay Engineering College in Kansas City, Missouri, preparing for a long and accomplished career as a Double E Electrical Engineer, specializing in power distribution. Larry’s work left an indelible mark on infrastructure and defense projects across the nation. He began his career with Missouri Power and Light and contributed to significant projects such as lighting projects in the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. Later, as the founder of LGA Engineering, he undertook government contracts on military bases and played a pivotal role in developing the electrical substations for the DART rail system in Dallas, Texas. His Type A personality and focus on his work were defining traits, earning him respect and admiration in his field. Outside of his professional life, Larry cherished the simplicity and beauty of farm life. He spent countless hours tending to his land in Ferris, Texas where he raised farm animals and grew hay and enjoyed the companionship of his many beloved dogs. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports. A man of diverse interests, he held a private pilot’s license and flew his own plane for many years before trading the skies for the open road in an RV. A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Larry valued his time in service and remained connected to his fellow veterans. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed biographies and western novels until Parkinson's Disease robbed him of his love of reading.
He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved stepmother Mildred Ashbrook; sister Elizabeth Prince and grandson Jonathan Ratliff.
He is survived by his wife Sandra (Sandy); sons: Larry Jr (wife Renee) and Aaron Ashbrook, all of Texas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary (KO) Comer and Sharon Schultz, of Missouri, and Barbara Hutchings, Arkansas; three nieces and one nephew and a host of great-nephews and nieces.
