Frederick Hattis Van Slooten, age 79, passed away on February 7, 2025 in Red Oak, Texas. Born on March 30, 1945 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the son of Frederick Van Slooten and June Hattis. Fred graduated from High School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1963 before pursuing his undergraduate studies at Middlebury College in Vermont. He went on to earn a master’s degree in economics from Yale University. His love for language and learning led him to teach English, and his passion for nature took him to the Grand Canyon, where he served as a forest ranger for two seasons. A man of deep integrity and unwavering honesty, Fred was known for his quick wit, down-to-earth demeanor, and sense of humor. He found joy in the simplicity of the outdoors, spending much of his free time hiking and camping. Before retiring, he worked as a word processor for a law firm, where his meticulous attention to detail served him well. Fred will be remembered for his sharp mind, kind spirit, and the laughter he shared with those around him. His legacy of honesty and humor will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and June Van Slooten and brother Steven Van Slooten.
He is survived by cousins, and his longtime friend Gary L. Benson.
