Esperanza Newman, age 62, of Plano, Texas passed away on September 5, 2023. She was born on September 12, 1960, to Victor Roa and Beatriz Mora in Tunja, Colombia where she lived until she was 19. She was one of eight siblings. Esperanza came to the United States as an exchange student and would later attend Kansas State University. She would go on to obtain her master’s degree in Spanish. She started working as a Spanish Professor at Kansas State, Emporia State, UTA, and retiring from teaching at Collin College. Before she found her place in education, she had a dream of being a pilot. She loved to fly, but with her young family teaching ultimately took first charge. Esperanza loved to travel, especially overseas. She spoke French, Spanish and English fluently. Esperanza was outgoing and always the life of any gathering. She gave everything to her family and those she loved. She was a devoted mother and then grandmother. Esperanza loved having family come from Colombia, always hosting them in her home. She couldn’t cook very well, her family jokes that she only knew how to burn food. French food was her favorite as it reminded her of time spent in France, and would always request a french restaurant on her birthday. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Esperanza is survived by her son Andrew and wife Natalia of Waxahachie, Texas; granddaughters: Samantha and Emilia; and her siblings: Fransisco, Beatriz, Victor Hugo, Rosy, Alberto, Martha and Yolanda.
