David Lawrence Mainz, Sr., age 86, passed away on January 9, 2026. David was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas by loving parents Emil and Edith Mainz. He attended St. Mary’s University and St. Louis University Medical School where he earned his medical degree. His residency was interrupted by military draft into the Army during the Vietnam War. He served 2 years in the military at the rank of Captain and earned a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious and heroic achievement in the building of schools for Vietnamese Children. After his military service, David earned his first board certification in Internal Medicine. Throughout his career he also earned board certifications in the areas Gastroenterology and Gerontology. He had a prolific medical career, across many cities in Georgia and Texas, where he helped countless patients and was highly respected by them as well as his colleagues. In retirement, David focused on his love of serving others and his love of nature. After becoming a Master Naturalist, he was chosen to be the first president of the chapter in his area. He volunteered his time at state parks helping in many ways. He also served his community of senior citizens in Alpine, Texas where he was on the board of the Sunshine House Senior Center. One of the many ways David helped was with Meals on Wheels food delivery which he manned on a regular basis with Dorothy’s help when needed. David and Dorothy recently moved to Red Oak, Texas to be closer to family. David managed all of his professional career, family matters and service to others with kindness, grace, patience and a bedside manner that made him beloved by all who knew him. He will be endlessly loved and greatly missed on our corner of this Earth.
He is preceded in death by his parents Emil and Edith Mainz and siblings: Mike Mainz and Dora (Mainz) Stovall.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Mainz, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage; he is also survived by his children: Diane Mainz, David Mainz, Jr. with his wife Debbie, Douglas Mainz with his wife Kristin, and Deborah Mainz Wooley; his grandchildren: Josh McLain, Jacob Mainz, Samantha Wooley, Trey Mainz and Emma Wooley; and his great-grandchild: Eleanor McLain. He was raised closely with his niece, Nancy Reininger who has also survived him.
There will be an interment ceremony honoring David on February 6, 2026 at 2:00 at the Fort Sam Houston Memorial Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
