Charlene Elizabeth Smith Johnson, age 87, of Ferris, Texas passed away surrounded by her family on January 10, 2024. She was born on August 11, 1936, in Houston, TX to Charles C. and Irene Smith. Charlene grew up in Waxahachie, TX and graduated from Waxahachie High School. On January 21, 1956, Charlene married Kenneth Johnson, and they were happily married for 61 years until Kenneth's passing in 2017. Over the years, Kenneth and Charlene lived in the cities of Lancaster, TX and Ferris, TX, and owned several local businesses, including ATCO Products, Prime Products, Old Fort Dallas Western Town, and the Old Brickyard Golf Course. Charlene was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Charlene was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who left a lasting impression on everyone she crossed paths with. Charlene was a woman of great conviction who never shied away from speaking her mind. She had a sharp tongue and a quick wit that could leave anyone in stitches, but beneath her tough exterior was a heart of gold. She will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her fierce determination, and her boundless love for others.
Charlene was a woman of many passions, she enjoyed traveling, gardening, painting, bowling, and going to the casino. She had an insatiable wanderlust that took her to every corner of the world. She was always eager to explore new places, new cultures, and new experiences during her travels. When she wasn’t traveling, she could be found tending to her garden, where she nurtured beautiful flowers and plants. She had a keen eye for detail and loved to capture the beauty of nature through her beautiful paintings. Charlene also enjoyed bowling, and for a while was a member of a bowling club that participated in area bowling leagues. Above all, her favorite past time was her trips to the casino, she enjoyed playing slot machines and had many notable lucky streaks. Charlene will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her green thumb, her artistic talent, her love for others, and her candor.
Charlene Elizabeth Smith Johnson was a beloved member of the Ferris community and will be deeply missed by her family, and by all who knew her.
Charlene is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Johnson, her father Charles C. Smith, her mother Irene Smith, her brothers Joe Patton, Charles Smith and David Smith, and sister Pat Rives.
Charlene is survived by her two children: Michael 'Mickey' Johnson of Ferris, TX, and Gary Johnson and fiancee Natalie Wood of Brownwood, TX; three grandchildren: Brian Johnson and wife Maranda of Bristol, TX, Derek Johnson and wife Sarah of Ferris, TX, and Taylor Johnson of Ferris, TX; and five great-grandchildren: Kennedy Johnson, Addison Johnson, Eva-Leigh Johnson, Lily-Mae Johnson, and Maisyn Cain.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17 from 6-8pm at Green Funeral Home Red Oak.
Funeral Service will be at Green Funeral Home Red Oak on Thursday, January 18 at 11am with burial to follow at the Waxahachie City Cemetery with Pastor Steve Hamm officiating.
