Betty Jayne Redd, age 87, passed away December 13, 2024. Born on July 6, 1937 in Austin, Texas she was the daughter of Joe Hurley Wittenberg and Helon Wales. Raised in Ferris, Texas, she graduated from Ferris schools, where her parents owned the local newspaper, The Ferris Wheel. Betty continued her education at East Texas State Teachers College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, and married her high school sweetheart, James William Redd, on August 25, 1956 in Ferris, Texas. Betty was a dedicated professional, working in various secretarial roles before joining the Army Air Force Exchange Service, where she retired after 20+ years of service. She later worked for the Dallas County District Clerk’s Office for over a decade before her final retirement. An adventurous spirit, Betty and Jim loved traveling, exploring destinations like Scotland, England, Ireland, and their beloved San Antonio. They also competed in chili cookoffs, proudly winning the 1978 Texas State Championship Cookoff in San Marcos. Betty was an avid outdoorswoman who found joy in fishing and hunting, especially at Cypress Springs and Lake Fork. Her family fondly recalls a trip to Pikes Peak, Colorado where their son had an unforgettable encounter with a cactus plant that Betty and Jim dug up to bring home. Betty adored her grandchildren, never missing their band performances, sports games, or milestones. Known for her headstrong and opinionated nature, she was always loving—expressing it in her own unique way—and never hesitated to let others know where they stood. As a collector, she enjoyed adding to her cherished collection of Beanie Babies. Her life was a beautiful mix of love, adventure, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Helon Wittenberg; sister Helon Jean and husband Clarence Edwin Hall; and granddaughter Victoria Lynn Jackson Board. She survived by husband James “Jim” William Redd, Sr; daughter Teri Lyn Redd Jackson and husband Lonnie Lee Jackson; son James “Bill” William Redd, Jr. and wife Ruth Angela Redd; grandchildren: Zachary Martin Jackson, William Cody Redd, Jordan Elaine Margotta, Kendal Colter Ramsay and husband William Lee Ramsay, Madison Angela Margotta and William Tanner Redd and wife Maria Fernanda Redd; great-grandchildren: Viviann Grace Board and Frances Rose Board; niece Jennifer Hall Hackett and husband John Hackett.
