Bessie L. Shafer

Bessie Loreta (Oakley) Shafer, age 94, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020. She was born April 27, 1926 to the late John Hardey and Josephine (Tillison) Oakley in Wills Point, Texas, she and her twin sister Dessie were two of 12 siblings. She took her first job babysitting for family fiends, later meeting the love of her life Joseph Bailey Weldon Shafer. They took their first date to the State Fair of Texas and later married; together they raised five sons. She worked for some time in sales at the Sears and Roebuck on Lamar Street in Dallas, but was happiest at home, raising and sewing blue jeans for her boys and quilting numerous quilts or knitting blankets for family and friends. She loved to cook, especially at holidays for her family and enjoyed sharing memories of her wonderful trip to the Holy Land. She will be missed by all who knew her. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Joseph Bailey Weldon Shafer; three sons: Bailey Wayne Shafer, Elbert Lynn Shafer and David Aaron Shafer and seven siblings.

She is survived by two sons: Marion Ray and wife Gail Shafer of Mesquite and Marvin Weldon and wife Patra Shafer of Arlington; 11 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren; four siblings, as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends. 

Graveside service will be 12:00 PM Monday, December 28, 2020 at the Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville, Texas.
