Berta Elizabeth Paredes, age 100, of Waxahachie, Texas, passed away on August 8, 2023, surrounded by her family. Berta was born in San Luis Potosí, México, to Alfredo E. and Altagracia Fresnillo Garza. During the Mexican Revolution, and only nine months old, her father moved the family to the United States for safety. It was a dangerous time, since her father worked for the Mexican government. At one point, he served as interim governor.
Berta later graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School, where she played on the All-Star softball team. After high school she met and married her husband, Eleazar Manzano Paredes, on April 27, 1943. They were married 32 years when he passed away on January 18, 1975. She then spent the last 48 years enjoying her 16 children and their families. She was always available for them. She was steady in her faith in Jesus, praying for those she loved, and demonstrating forgiveness and acceptance. She laughed easily and had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed traveling, always ready to go with whomever was going somewhere. But, family gatherings were her favorite. Getting all the children, grands, great grands, and great great grands together in one place made her very happy. Also, getting visits was a highlight for her. Berta lived a simple life and never focused on material things. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two children: Herman G. Paredes and Rene Carlos Paredes.
She is survived by 14 children: Diana E. Martinez and husband Manuel of Waxahachie, Texas, Eleazar M. Paredes, Jr. and wife Brenda of Brownsville, Texas; Yolanda Y. Paredes of Ennis, Texas; Hilda Y. Berryman of Deer Park, Texas; Victor J. Paredes of Houston, Texas; Brunilda A. Padron and husband Ramon of Houston, Texas; Clotilde S. Smith of Waxahachie, Texas; Robert R. Ortega of La Porte, Texas; Mark D. Paredes of Austin, Texas; and Milton S. Paredes and wife Sharon of Friendship, Arkansas; 30 grandchildren; 60 great grandchildren; many great great grandchildren, as well as numerous other extended family members and friends.
