Benjamin Welch McKee passed away at home on April 7, 2026 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of strength, independence, and deep pride in his heritage. Ben was born on November 5, 1934 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to George D. McKee and Ahniwake Lucille Welch. He married Violette Adams in 1980 in Dallas, Texas. He carried a deep pride in his Cherokee heritage throughout his life and remained closely connected to his identity, beliefs, and community. A man of many talents and passions, Ben was a farmer at heart, known especially for growing and cultivating beautiful heirloom irises. He found true joy in working the land and sharing what he grew with others. He also had a lifelong love of vintage cars and trucks, spending countless hours restoring, tinkering, and enjoying the stories and friendships that came along with them. Ben honorably served his country in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division and the Air Force National Guard, carrying out his duties with dedication and integrity. After his military service, he pursued higher education at Dallas Baptist University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business. He was a man who loved the outdoors and lived life on his own terms. Hunting, fishing, trapping, and riding were among his favorite pastimes. He was known for his strong spirit, his willingness to stand up for what he believed in, and his unwavering support for others, especially veterans, elders, and those in need... but some might even say he was as stubborn as a mule. Most of his descendants definitely carry on that trait. Ben was a devoted father, grandfather, and family man. Ben will be remembered for his resilience, his wisdom, his storytelling, and the way he lived unapologetically true to himself. His life was one of hard work, conviction, and love for his family and heritage.
